Meet our new board members
A warm welcome to our new board members, Mauricio Hernández and Pete Gallo (and a hearty welcome back to the 2026 board treasurer Jordan Dalton). Shift CHC held board elections on February 2nd, 2026 to fill seats for two expiring terms. We were excited to have two new community members join Jordan in the running and the board unanimously voted to add one more board seat, welcoming all candidates for a total of six board members.
Before welcoming our new members, a HUGE thank you to our outgoing board president, Arleigh Greenwald, for a truly incredible amount of work standing up the new organization and spearheading major initiatives (bike map, post-Chantal trail closure advocacy, a kidical mass bike ride, branding, operational systems, the list goes on!!!) Arleigh was a force in getting things done and while she needed to step down to devote more time to a new and exciting job, she remains an awesome advocate for Shift CHC’s mission.
And now, to introduce our new board members in their own words:
Mauricio Hernández, Chapel Hill resident
I’m interested in alternative transportation because I grew up in a city with many different ways to get around. When I arrived in North Carolina, I was amazed to see how everything is built around cars, which causes many issues. I use public transportation almost every weekday and ride my bike nearly every day as well. We also have a car, and my family uses it daily.
I’m interested in supporting efforts to improve public transportation and walkability in Chapel Hill–Carrboro. My priority is to develop and implement strategies that encourage the government to invest in this infrastructure.
Pete Gallo, Chapel Hill resident
Cycling is my personal preferred mode of transit from Briarcliff to anywhere in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Our kids are now at the age where they are cycling from Briarcliff Fordham to Bolin Creek trail and beyond and riding greenways is one of our favorite family activities.
I cofounded the Boone Bicycle Initiative and while in undergrad at Appalachian State, I participated in a community bicycle co-op designed to assist the local Watauga County community with accessing free and reduced price bicycles and free bike repair services. I’m excited to join the board of Shift CHC to improve and expand upon the safety, utility, and range of Chapel Hill’s low/no-carbon transit systems.
